1. BLADE RUNNER 2049 – 2017 (8.0)
Movies by Ryan Gosling may be predominantly romances, but his most successful film to date based on its IMDb score is an altogether different affair. This sequel to the seminal Blade Runner is a masterful science fiction that brings many of the unanswered questions from the first film into sharp relief. Blade Runner K, played by Gosling, goes in search of the legendary Deckard to try and stop a long-buried secret from destroying civilisation. Also starring Harrison Ford, Ana de Armas, and Dave Bautista.
2. LA LA LAND – 2016 (8.0)
This incredible film won a staggering six Oscars, including Best Motion Picture, and gave Gosling his first Oscar nomination for Best Actor. A painter and a pianist try to make their careers work in the melting pot that is Los Angeles or ‘La La Land’, and fall in love in the process. But when success finally does come, it could potentially ruin their relationship forever. Also starring Emma Stone, Rosemarie DeWitt, and J.K. Simmons.
3. DRIVE – 2011 (7.8)
It seems that a lot of the best Ryan Gosling movies are based in and around Hollywood, and this gripping drama is no exception. Gosling plays a Hollywood stuntman, who brings his job home with him when he helps his neighbour’s husband rob a pawn shop. Acting as the getaway driver, Gosling’s character thinks it’s an easy job. The trouble is that the robbery triggers some serious and deadly repercussions. Also starring Carey Mulligan, Bryan Cranston, and Albert Brooks.
4. THE NOTEBOOK – 2004 (7.8)
This multi-layered and deeply touching film is an interesting take on the usual ‘class differences’ love story. A woman with dementia asks an elderly man in her nursing home to read a story from an old notebook about a love affair between two very different young people. One a simple country boy the other an affluent city girl. The story is set in the 1930s against a background of oppressive class structure in North Carolina. A bitter-sweet tale and beautifully underplayed, making this one of the most charming additions to our Ryan Gosling filmography.
5. THE BIG SHORT – 2015 (7.8)
6. CRAZY, STUPID LOVE – 2011 (7.4)
Ryan Gosling excels at rom-coms, and this is one of his best. After being asked for a divorce by his wife, a man needs to learn how to get back into the dating game. A new friend, the mysterious Jacob, teaches him how to navigate the choppy waters of the singles scene once again. Ryan plays Jacob, the professional bachelor who knows every trick in the book when it comes to dating – or does he? Also starring Steve Carrell, Julianne Moore and Emma Stone.
7. THE NICE GUYS – 2016 (7.4)
Set in the 1970s, this decidedly un-PC film delves into the seedier side of LA. Two very different detectives have to uncover the truth behind a missing girl and the death of a porn star. With an absolute eye for detail and authenticity, this well-paced and punchy action comedy has as many laughs as it does twists and turns. Also starring Russell Crowe, Angourie Rice, and Matt Bomer.
8. THE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES – 2012 (7.3)
Motorcycle stunt riding doesn’t pay the bills, so an impoverished stuntman takes to robbing banks to boost his income and support his ex and their new baby. The trouble is, he’s a better stunt rider than he is bank robber, and a rookie cop is determined to track him down while trying to stay on the right side of a corrupt detective. Could life get any more complicated for either man? Also starring Bradley Cooper, Eva Mendes and Craig Van Hook.
9. BLUE VALENTINE – 2010 (7.3)
Every Ryan Gosling movies list includes plenty of steamy romance, and Blue Valentine is on every single one. This passion-filled story tells the tale of a contemporary married couple and how their relationship develops over the years. From the first throws of boiling passion to the challenges of keeping the magic alive in a long-term relationship, it’s a far more complex movie than you might first imagine, and well deserving of its place on our list of the best Ryan Gosling movies. Also starring Michelle Williams, John Doman, and Faith Wladyka.
10. FIRST MAN – 2018 (7.3)
Our final film in our top 10 Ryan Gosling movies is very different from the others – a biopic of the first man to step onto another planet. Gosling plays astronaut Neil Armstrong and takes a long look at his life and that mission that quite literally catapulted him to the stars. Ryan turns in a powerful performance as Armstrong, demonstrating how much more of a complex and fascinating man he really was, and the sacrifices he made to take that ‘one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind’. Also starring Claire Foy, Jason Clarke, and Kyle Chandler.
