What to Expect from Wicked 2: Plot, Cast, and Musical Moments to Watch For
Hold onto your witches’ hats, it’s time to return to Oz and pick up where we left off in the story of Elphaba and Glinda. The Wicked 2 movie, or Wicked: For Good, is set to be one of the biggest family releases of the year, and definitely one of the most eagerly anticipated for fans of the first Wicked film.
Due for release on 21st November, the Wicked 2 plot is guaranteed to be a tear-jerker that takes us deeper into the story of two of the most famous witches of stage and screen - there are even hints of the arrival of Dorothy, too. Let’s find out more as we follow the Yellow Brick Road and discover what’s in store for our favourite Oz characters.
Previously, in Oz…
Before we take a look at the Wicked 2 movie details, let's do a quick recap. Wicked is based on the musical and tells the story of Elphaba, a girl born with green skin and regarded as an outcast by the people of Oz. Her friend Glinda, who later becomes Glinda the Good, becomes her rival and, eventually, as a result of propaganda and social pressure, her supposed enemy. Wicked is just the first half of the journey, and ends with the two witches going their own ways, not through choice, but through necessity.
Wicked 2 - The Next Chapter
Wicked 2 takes us to the next act. After challenging the totalitarian rule of the Wizard, Elphaba is now outcast as the ‘Wicked Witch of the West’. Glinda has been granted the title of Glinda the Good and is seen as the protector and defender of Munchkinland against Elphaba's wrath. But is the divide as vast as everyone thinks, or is there common ground where the two witches can come together and bury their past differences?
The Wicked 2 movie plot is far more complex than you would first think. This is no fairy story, where ‘good’ and ‘bad’ do battle. It’s a far more nuanced and in-depth look at how society treats those who are deemed to be ‘different’ in any way (in Elphaba’s case, the colour of her skin).
Why Split The Story Into Two?
The Wicked films are based on the two acts of the stage musical. To do justice to this incredible story, composer Stephen Schwartz explained that despite pressure to tell the story in one go, it was felt that to do so wouldn’t allow some of the shining moments of the stage musical to be included, right up to the climactic song ‘Defying Gravity’, which brings the curtain down.
To allow the story to unfold and give other key musical moments a chance to shine, the Wicked 2 movie was a natural progression. With a cluster of awards already lined up, giving Wicked two bites of the apple was the right thing to do.
The Wicked 2 Cast
Wicked 2 sees the return of Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and pop royalty Ariana Grande as Glinda. Jeff Goldblum plays the Wizard of Oz, while Michelle Yeoh plays university principal Madame Morrible. Other Wicked 2 cast members include Peter Dinklage as the voice of Dr Dillamond, Marissa Bode as Nessarose, Colman Domingo as the voice of the Cowardly Lion, and Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero.
Musical moments to look out for
Wicked is a musical, so it’s no surprise that music plays a key role in this second instalment. The curtain raiser is a reprise of ‘No One Mourns the Wicked’, but there’s much more to come than yet another lambast at poor old Elphaba. ‘No Place Like Home’ is a brand new addition from composer Stephen Schwartz, where Elphaba voices the inner conflict that troubles her. Why would she even want to save Oz, a place that doesn’t want her?
‘The Wicked Witch of the East’ is focused more on the horrendous marriage between Nessarose and Boq, while Wonderful reveals more manipulative behaviour by the Wizard. ‘As Long as You're Mine’ is a love song that celebrates Elphaba and Fiyero's relationship, while ‘No Good Deed’ is a belting and heartbreaking manifestation of Elphaba's furious rage as her plans turn to dust.
Get ready with the hankies because the last number, ‘For Good’, is bound to get you sobbing. The climax of the Wicked 2 movie sees the two witches bidding farewell to each other and fulfilling their individual destinies. The music of Wicked is an emotional rollercoaster documenting joy, anger, sorrow, resignation, betrayal, and everything in between. It’s this incredible balance that has given Wicked 2: For Good its soul.
