Spider-Man Movies In Order & Release Date
Everybody has heard of Spider-Man, and that worldwide fame can only be attributed to the movie's amazing box office success. There are 12 Spider-Man films to watch (passing over the 70s’ live action film and TV series with Nicholas Hammond) and the best way to indulge in the Spider-Verse is by watching them from start to finish. And you’re in luck – here’s a list of every Spider-Man movie in order.
Spider-Man (2002)
From cartoon to big screen, Sam Raimi directed the first Spider-Man film that would pave the way for one of the biggest comic book movie franchises of the 21st century. Tobey Maguire is Peter Parker by day and Spider-Man by night and is joined by his on-screen love interest, Mary Jane, played by Kirsten Dunst. The iconic upside-down/on the side of the building kiss made its mark in this film while the box office hauled in a massive $825 million. From the start, it was clear the Spider-Man film franchise would be a great success.
Spider-Man 2 (2004)
Tobey Maguire's second debut as the comic book hero, in 2004 Spider-Man 2 was released after much anticipation from movie-loving fans. In the second instalment of the Spider-Man franchise, we sit on the edge of our seats and watch our titular hero come up against his supervillain rival, Doctor Otto Octavius (Alfred Molina) after a tragic lab accident turned him towards a darker, twisted and evil life. Following its prequel's footsteps, the film raked in a grand $789 million.
Spider-Man 3 (2007)
The final film in the Sam Raimi trilogy and (nearly) the last time we see Tobey Maguire on the big screen as our favourite skyscraper-swinging hero. Unlike the two films released before Spider-Man 3, this 2007 addition followed Spider-Man epically defeating three new villains. Grossing an impressive $895 million at the box office, Sandman was played by Thomas Haden Church, Venom was played by Topher Grace, and Green Goblin returned to the saga, now played by James Franco.
The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)
Five years after the Sam Raimi trilogy aired, Marc Webb took his seat on the director's chair, where he stayed for the subsequent two films. Alongside his Spider-Man debut, Andrew Garfield also took on the title role opposite Emma Stone's Gwen Stacy. Following the action-packed blueprint we saw in the films before this 2012 rendition, Spidey takes on Lizard, a mutated colleague of Peter's father. Continuing the franchise's success, The Amazing Spider-Man earned $758 million at the box office.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014)
Reaping over $709 million at the box office, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was the second and last film for both Marc Webb and Andrew Garfield. Featuring a trio of ghastly villains, the sequel saw Spider-Man battle Electro (Jamie Foxx), Rhino (Paul Giamatti) and the return of Green Goblin (Dane DeHaan). Despite its anticipation in the lead-up to its release, the film did not live up to its box office expectations and received many mixed reviews.
Captain America: Civil War (2016)
In 2015, after a rocky finish to the last Spider-Man movie, Sony Pictures announced a partnership with Marvel Studios for the next phase of the comic book sensation’s comeback to the big screen. Even though Captain America: Civil War is obviously not a Spidey movie, this film introduces Spider-Man to the Marvel cinematic universe. Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) introduces Tom Holland as the new Peter Parker, establishing what will become a long on-screen friendship between the pair. And Spidey’s return saw boosted box office results, with the Marvel film winning over $1 billion.
Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)
Tom Holland made his solo Spider-Man film debut in 2017 in a film that takes place after the events of (and his appearance in) Captain America: Civil War. In this rumbustious movie, Peter Parker balances high school while trying to prove to his good friend Tony Stark that he is ready to join the Avengers. We meet MJ (Zendaya) and Ned (Jacob Batalon), and this movie sets the scene for a villain-fighting future for Spidey himself. Boosting box office success for the Marvel enterprise, the film earned a whopping $880 million.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)
Separate from the mainline films, this extra Spidery story follows Shameik Moore’s Miles Morales and sooner than later, we meet lots of Spider-people from many different multiverses. This eclectic cast includes Spide-Gwen (Hailee Steinfeld), Peter B. Parker (Jake Johnson) and Spider-Ham (John Mulaney). The film received an incredible response and fans are geared up to welcome its sequel later this year.
Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
The entire Marvel Cinematic Universe joins forces in this epic Avengers movie. With a cast full of heroic characters and a plot of ruthless adventure, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man disappears at the hands of Thanos. This film is well worth a watch – and its sequel is also essential if you wish to discover Spidey's fate.
Avengers: Endgame (2019)
Although Tom Holland's Spider-Man doesn't make his appearance til the end – and we won't give too much away on the character's destiny – the ending of this movie is a crucial moment in Spidey's story. And with no surprise, Avengers: Endgame broke box-office records, becoming the highest-grossing film in history.
Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019)
After the heartbreak of Endgame (if you don’t know, you need to watch it), the next Spider-Man instalment deals with the emotional fallout and turmoil left in its wake. Starting in New York City, we are soon transported to Europe so Peter Parker can enjoy a holiday free of action and heroic deeds - or so he thinks. Crossing paths with some notable characters you’ll enjoy watching on screen, we recommend watching to the very end – the post-credit scenes are pretty exciting.
Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)
The most recent Spidey fix the Marvel Cinematic Universe has treated us to, this film picks up straight from those post-credit scenes we just mentioned – and that's why you must watch all Spider-Man movies in order. In this cracking chapter straight from the Spider-Verse, Peter and his friends experience absolute turmoil as their lives are turned upside down. With a bit of help from Dr Strange, No Way Home is as much the next chapter in Holland’s story as it is an extension of Maguire and Garfield's. The story comes full circle, and we can see why the fans loved this one as the box office raked in a massive $1.9 billion.
Where can I watch the Spider-Man movies in order?
The Marvel and Sony Spider-Man films are available on Netflix, Prime Video, BBC iPlayer, Disney+, and on-demand…just not all in the one place. You’ll have to jump between these platforms to watch the entirety of the Spider-man franchise. And as for the next instalment of Spidey’s world, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse comes out in June of this year.
